Welcome to the EAGLE server in a suburban office in Cheltenham Melbourne Australia.
It's a miracle of technology and physics that this vintage PC is still running 17 years after it was built in 2009. The original machine was used for software development for a few years before being replaced and demoted to be the office file server.
The main reason this ancient PC is still in use is because it runs Windows Server editions. A few attempts have been made in recent years to find a modern small, quiet and cheap replacement, but none of the candidates support running Windows Server. The ASUS NUC 15 range apparently supports Windows Server, but the starting price is about $1000 for a working configuration. Research is ongoing to find an affordable replacement.
EAGLE has been upgraded a few times over the years. It still has the original P55-UD3R motherboard and Intel i7 860 2.8GHz CPU. The RAM was recently upgraded from 4GB to 8GB after a struggle to find compatible RAM modules.
One of the two original metal drives crashed in February 2024, and it was unfortunately the C: drive. This disaster provided an opportunity to ditch the old drives and replace them both with a single 2TB SSD, thereby boosting capacity and performance. It took 5 days of intensive work to restore the file-systems, install Active Directory, recreate domain accounts, then clear the domain permissions from the several client PCs in the network and carefully reset the permissions to use new domain accounts.
EAGLE's host operating system is Windows Server 2019 standard edition, which acts as the domain controller and file server for the Nancy Street Network. Hyper-V is enabled and runs a guest Windows Server 2025 named TOUCAN with IIS web server and SQL Server 2019. When you are looking at this website, you are actually looking at a web page served by IIS running in the TOUCAN VM.
The purple Window is the TOUCAN VM.
